October 5, 2009 – Mississippi native A.M. Peters’ feature documentary “NO Cross, NO Crown,” about how music and culture in New Orleans will recover from Hurricane Katrina, will play at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival.
“NO Cross, NO Crown” is a timely and engaging feature documentary that examines how New Orleans’ music and culture can survive the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Produced by dinomonster films, the film documents how New Orleans has been a fundamental element of American music since its inception, embracing the unique artists and underdogs that make up her inhabitants. And while New Orleans was entrenched in a rich history of struggle and the blending of European and African cultural streams, America’s identity and culture flourished to the soundtracks of blues, jazz, hip-hop, rock n’ roll, gospel and R&B—all of which have their origins in New Orleans.
Over 30 musicians and experts speak out about New Orleans’ musical heritage with its dozens of styles, outlets, backgrounds and sources of inspiration and what the future of the city and American music holds. Included are Why New Orleans Matters author Tom Piazza, Mardi Gras Indian Chief Alfred Doucette, American Routes host Nick Spitzer, Creole Serenader Don Vappie, Center for the Study of the American South Senior Associate Director Bill Ferris, jazz and gospel singer Topsy Chapman, Swing Trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, chart-topping singer/song writer Clarence “Frogman” Henry and many more.
“NO Cross, NO Crown” is produced and directed by A.M. Peters, who grew up in nearby Vicksburg, Mississippi, and now currently resides in New York City. This is the first feature documentary for dinomonster films, Peters’ indie film banner, which produces feature films and documentaries, as well as music and corporate videos offering a fresh style and perspective on characters and culture. She’s currently an assistant editor for The First 48 on A&E. Her produced scripts include Jack Quack (The Path), an animated short film that toured film festivals, and the comedy Electronic Devices, starring Rosemary Gore. Peters also assisted with American Teen for A&E Indiefilms, and a pilot for AMC, Autobiography, staring Dennis Hopper. She has also worked with other clients such as Smith Barney, Winton/duPont Films, the United Nations Population Fund and Merrill Lynch.
